What the extension does

YT Easy Translate is a Chrome extension that turns on YouTube's built-in caption auto-translate, so captions appear in your language. It runs only on https://www.youtube.com/.

Information the extension accesses

On www.youtube.com video pages, the extension reads the following information that the YouTube player already holds in your browser:

• The video's caption tracks: which caption languages the video has, and which audio language is its default.
• The player's current caption state: whether captions are on, which track is shown, and whether an advertisement is playing.
• Addresses of the caption requests the YouTube player makes and whether YouTube answered them, read from the browser's performance timing information. This is used only to notice when YouTube refuses a translated caption request ("too many requests") so the extension can ask the player to try again a little later.
• Your browser's language, when the caption language is set to follow Chrome.

This information is processed only inside your browser. It is not stored and is not sent anywhere. The extension does not read caption text.

What the extension changes on YouTube

• It asks the YouTube player to show captions translated into your chosen language, or to show a caption track already in that language.
• It may click the player's captions (CC) button to turn captions on, or off for a video already spoken in your language.
• If you choose caption size, colours or background transparency in the popup, it applies them through the player's own caption settings, which YouTube keeps in your browser.
• It adds a small TH/EN button to the player, which you can hide in the popup.

Information the extension stores

The extension uses the Chrome storage API (chrome.storage.sync) to store these settings:

• enabled: whether the extension is on.
• language: the caption language, or "same as Chrome".
• showButton: whether the TH/EN button is shown in the player.
• fontSize, color, background, backgroundOpacity: your caption appearance choices.
• styleResetAt: the time you last pressed Reset, used to tell open YouTube tabs to reset the caption appearance.

If Chrome sync is turned on in your browser, Chrome may sync these settings between your own devices. The developer cannot access them. Chrome removes them when you uninstall the extension.

Information transmitted outside your browser

The extension makes no network requests and contains no code that sends data to the developer or to any other party. When it switches on translation, the YouTube player itself requests the translated captions from YouTube, in the same way as when you choose Auto-translate in YouTube's own menu. That request is handled by YouTube under YouTube's and Google's privacy policies.

Personal information

The extension does not collect personal information, account or login information, authentication data, browsing history, watch history, location, or usage statistics.

Selling and sharing of data

The extension does not sell, share, or transfer any data to third parties.

Third-party services

The extension does not use any third-party services, including analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking services. It does not load remote code; all of its code is included in the extension package.

Permissions

• storage: to save your settings.
• activeTab: when you open the extension's popup, to check whether the YouTube tab you are viewing has loaded the extension, and to refresh that tab if you press the Refresh button.
• Access to https://www.youtube.com/* (content scripts): to switch on caption translation on YouTube video pages. The extension does not run on any other website.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

If the extension's data practices change, this page will be updated and the date at the top of this page will be revised.
